Application Requirements

Eligibility

  • Medical students (MS1–MS4) at partner institutions
  • Undergraduate and graduate students at partner universities
  • Residents & fellows at Cook Children's or affiliated programs
  • U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or eligible visa holders
  • Strong academic record and genuine research interest

Required Documents

  • Completed online application form
  • Personal statement describing research interests
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  • Letter(s) of recommendation (upon request)

Who can apply to the PRTP?

The PRTP is a true pipeline — we welcome applicants from high school through post-doctoral level. Each track has specific eligibility requirements. Contact us to find the right fit for your stage.

Can international students apply?

Applicants who do not require visa sponsorship and are authorized to participate in research training programs in the United States are eligible to apply. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time. If you have questions about your eligibility, we encourage you to contact our office prior to applying.

Can I choose my research mentor?

Applicants indicate research interests and mentor preferences. Final matching is based on mutual interest and faculty availability across pediatric specialties.

What does a typical research experience look like?

Every PRTP trainee does real research — formulating hypotheses, designing and executing studies, analyzing data, preparing manuscripts, and presenting findings at scientific meetings.

Are there funding opportunities for trainees?

Yes. The PRTP provides conference travel funding, publication fee assistance, and access to intramural seed grants. Philanthropic support continues to expand these opportunities.
